Teatterissa kannuksensa hankkinut ohjaaja William Oldroyd vei tarinan Skotlannin nummille ja karsi musiikin minimiin. Elokuvan jyrkkä draama ei kalpene maineikkaiden esikuvien rinnalla. Florence Pugh häikäisee pelottomassa pääroolissa. Nainen oli 1800-luvun lopulla kauppatavaraa, joka päätyi vaimoksi maakaupan seurauksena. Lady Macbethin syrjäinen kartano on viheliäisen lohduton, aviomies kyvytön pervo, paikallinen pappi miehisen kurinpidon äänitorvi ja appiukko sadistinen kiukkupussi. Kolmikko tekee kaikkensa nujertaakseen nuoren vaimon avuttomaksi seinäkoristeeksi. Katherine (Pugh) ei suostu riutumaan rituaalien puristuksessa. Kamarineito Anna (Naomi Ackie) olisi luonteva liittolainen, mutta vaikuttaa alituista korsettia kiristäessään enemmän vanginvartijalta.
